EDDIE BAXTER CUP COMPETITION

Result of Eddie Baxter Cup - Tuesday 23rd July 2024
I was very relieved that this competition went smoothly because I changed it from an 8 pair to a 9 Pair competition in the morning so that everyone who was available could play. A 9 Pair competition is very much more complicated to organise, and in addition I had to make a special trip to Grove Gardens to collect more scorecards. I was working it all out in the morning and only just managed it in time!
It was raining in Kingston at 1pm and I was worried it might interfere with play. However, once again we were very lucky with the weather, and it stayed dry all afternoon.
This was an unseeded drawn pairs competition in which 18 players took part, each bowling 4 woods. Each pair played 2 ends against each of the other 8 pairs making a total of 16 ends. Each pair sat out of one of the 9 rounds required and all 4 rinks were constantly in use.
I reverted to putting rink numbers (plus rounds and opponents) on the back of the scorecards – thanks to Vernon for suggesting this. This avoided any confusion as was caused in the last one-day competition by having rink numbers on the front of the scorecard.
The pairs were drawn out by our President, Vernon, and ex-Captain, Chris, as follows, and the final scores are shown in brackets:
Pair A – Rob and Stuart (+5)
Pair B – Chris W and Derek (-2)
Pair C – David and Jonathan (+4)
Pair D – Alfie and Garry (+2)
Pair E – Roger B and Vernon (-1)
Pair F – Lynn and Chris C (-15)
Pair G – Eileen and Bob (+6)
Pair H – Andrew and Gerrard (+15)
Pair I – Maureen and Mike (-14)
Four of the nine pairs finished on a minus score. It’s great to report that we had 4 of our new members playing and 3 of them finished on a plus score which is very well done: Garry, playing with Alfie, finished in 5th place, David, playing with Jonathan, finished in 4th place, and Rob, playing with Stuart, finished in 3rd place.
Well done to Eileen and Bob who were the runners up and many congratulations to Andrew and Gerrard who were comfortable winners. Notably, Andrew and Gerrard won all their 8 matches so they were very worthy winners.
Many thanks to Maureen and Vernon for organising the refreshments and raffle.
Here's looking forward to our next indoor cup competition, the Jack Gaydon Trophy, which is another (seeded) Pairs competition to be held on August 15th. Victor will be back from holiday by then so he will be organising it.
Best Wishes
Jonathan (Club Captain)
