JACK GAYDON TROPHY COMPETITION

Result of Jack Gaydon Trophy – 15th August 2024
Once again, thank you all for taking part in the Jack Gaydon competition. I apologise for the delayed start and the mix-up in the schedule. Despite that, we really enjoyed the game, and the weather was just right for us.
As I mentioned before, winning or losing isn’t as important as the enjoyment and happiness we get from participating.
Team Results and Analysis:
Team A (Victor and Alfie) lost 4 points in the first round, gained 10 points over the next three rounds, and finished with a score of 14 against 20,ending with a score of -6.
Team B (Woody and Andrew N) started strong with 4 points in the first round and maintained momentum throughout with consistent 2s and 3s, finishing with 25 points against 6, giving them a winning margin of 19 points.
Team C (Bernard and Chris) gained 5 points in their first round but lost momentum in the next two rounds. They made a comeback in the final ends, finishing with 15 points but ending with a score of -8.
Team D (Vernon and Eileen) had a tough start but managed to score 6 points after several rounds, ending with a total of 9 points and a score of -17.
Team E (Colin and Roger J) scored 4 points in the first round and moved up to 12 points by the fourth round. They steadily improved and finished with 20 points, winning by 3 points.
Team F (Jonathan and Chris C) started with 0 points in the first round but gained momentum with a 4-point end, followed by consistent 4s and 2s. They ended up with 19 points, winning by 2 points.
Team G (Bob and Maureen) started well with 6 points in the second round and increased their pace, securing 5 points in one end and finishing with 24 points, resulting in a winning margin of 8 points.
Team H (Gerrard and Stuart) scored steadily with 1s and 2s in the first three rounds, reaching 8 points. They finished with a total of 17 points but ended with a score of -1.
Final Standings:
I will now announce the results in reverse order:
Third Place: Team E (Colin and Roger J) with 3 points.
Runners-Up: Team F (Bob and Maureen) with 8 points.
Winners: Team B (Woody and Andrew N) with a score of 19 points, one of the highest scores in our one-day competitions.
Now, I’d like to invite our president, Vernon, to present the Jack Gaydon trophy to the winners, Woody and Andrew.
A Story to Remember:
I'd like to share a well-known story about the Rabbit and the Tortoise. As usual, the Rabbit was far ahead in the race and decided to take a break, confident in victory. Meanwhile, the Tortoise stayed focused and kept moving steadily. When the Rabbit tried to catch up, it was too late—the Tortoise had already won comfortably.
This might remind you of some players in our recent internal competition. I’ll let you guess who they are!
The lesson here is simple: even if you’re ahead, the last ball can still decide the victory.
Acknowledgments:
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Maureen and Vernon for preparing the lovely tea and organizing the raffle tickets.
Our president thanked Chris Caswell, who is leaving the club to move to Somerset, for all her contributions as Club Secretary, Competition Secretary, and for her involvement in many other club activities. As a token of appreciation, a gift was presented to her.
Chris expressed her gratitude to all members and said she will miss our club greatly.
Upcoming Competition:
Our next one-day competition is the Mike Whitby Triples. We have 19 players confirmed, and all have been selected. Alfie has graciously agreed to be the reserve.
Important Note:
Some members are finding it difficult to fill out the Yes/No form. When you receive my email, please reply or forward it directly to me, but do not reply to "all", just to me.
The form will be at the bottom of the email. Simply type Yes or No next to your name. If the "To" field is blank, please change it to my email address.
Regards
Victor (one day competition secretary and Facilities manager)
