Mayor's Match
Grove Gardens - Sunday 30th April 2023
Teddington Team 1: Chris C., Victor, Colin (skip)
Teddington Team 2: Eileen, Stuart, Bob (skip)
Teddington Team 3: Roger J, Bernard, Jonathan (skip)
Mayor's Team: Alfie, Roger B, Gerrard (skip)
Our first match of the season was blessed by perfect weather for playing bowls – one of the nicest days of the year to date.
On rink 1, Eileen, Stuart and Bob (representing the Mayor’s team) were drawn against Rashmi, James and Ben from Strawberry Hill. It was a very close game, although Strawberry Hill were 6-1 up after just 2 ends. However, after 10 ends the Mayor’s team had pulled ahead having won 7 ends in a row. Unfortunately, they couldn’t hold on and eventually lost 17-20.
On rink 2, Roger J, Bernard and Jonathan (Mayor’s team) got off to a flying start and were soon ahead 12-1 against Alfie, Roger B and Gerrard. However, there followed a very even contest with the final score being 26-15 to the Mayor’s team after the 18 ends.
On rink 3, Chris C, Victor and Colin (Mayor’s team) matched their opponents from Hampton, Chris, Dave and Kevin, in the first half with the score being tied at 7-7 after 9 ends. Unfortunately they faded in the second half and lost 11-23.
The overall match score was 54 to the Mayor’s team and 58 to the opposition. Winners were determined by the biggest margin of victory on a rink, hence Hampton narrowly won the Mayor’s Trophy.
There was a really nice friendly atmosphere and we all enjoyed tea and a raffle after the match. Vernon delivered his presidential ‘speech’ and medals were awarded to all players followed by the trophy presentation to Hampton who had brought along a good number of supporters. Finally, the Mayor of Richmond, Councillor Julia Cambridge made a ‘speech’ which was very supportive of our club and of the game of bowls.
Many thanks to all who participated and especially to those who set up the rinks, to Vernon for his presidential role and to Maureen for the tea (the scones, jam and cream were delicious!).
Personally I found the structure of the competition a little confusing, especially given that both teams on rink 2 consisted of all Teddington players. As Club Captain who compiled the teams I would have felt uncomfortable if one of these teams had won the trophy.
I wonder if in future years the opposition could be made up from 3 other teams from the Borough as I’m told it used to be (North Shene used to play, but apparently the club has folded). Mid Surrey could perhaps be invited to participate given their location? Maybe something to be considered at the next appropriate committee meeting?
Here’s looking forward to a good game next Sunday at Esher and hopefully a win for Teddington!
